]]> The purpose of an SSL certificate is to keep sensitive information sent across the Internet encrypted so that only the intended recipient can make use of it. Without the use of an SSL any data that is input into a website can be seen by third parties, who may be snooping around a users web session.

SSL Example

Google’s Chrome internet browser is now identifying insecure sites (websites not using an SSL) with an exclamation mark and “Not secure” label in the browser bar in front of the web address. If a website does have a secure connection established, a padlock icon and HTTPS prefix appear in the browser bar. As shown in the example images.

There are also SEO benefits to having an SSL certificate installed, Google has stated that security features such as https and SSL certificates are ranking factors, so a website that uses SSL may be favored over one that doesn’t have one.
