There’s no surprise that Facebook is in the news again, but this time it’s design related (hurray).

Facebook has recently shown off its new corporate identity, as Facebook put it ”designed to help us better represent the diversity of products we build, establish distinction from the Facebook app and communicate our purpose in the world.”.

The recognisable Facebook app and website blue identity will remain the same. The new corporate identity will be used to remind consumers that products such as Instagram and WhatsApp sit under the Facebook brand.

The new brand identity uses a custom rounded typeface and goes the opposite direction to their other products (Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp) with the use of capital letters. The brand also uses different colours depending on the product it’s representing (for example it would be green on the WhatsApp app).

Simple, effective, but not really pushing any boundaries and isn’t going to win any design awards soon, but overall it gets a like from us. For more information visit the Facebook Newsroom.

If you’re looking at rebranding your company’s brand, then we would love to chat, get in contact with us.

Today we see Google+ finally laid to rest. Launched back in 2011, Google+ was Google’s attempt at a social network platform.

Like many social media networks, it had the usual features such as status updates and photo posts. One of its key feature was the ability to sort friends into ‘Circles’ and make ’hangout’ group video calls.

Google let the world know that millions of users had signed up within the first few weeks of the launch, but unfortunately for Google few users were using it and the social media platform never really took off.

Surprisingly Google+ isn’t the first product Google has failed at, check out ‘The Google Cemetery’ created by Naeem Nur, which lists a number of Google products that didn’t quite make it.

RIP Google+.
