There’s no surprise that Facebook is in the news again, but this time it’s design related (hurray).

Facebook has recently shown off its new corporate identity, as Facebook put it ”designed to help us better represent the diversity of products we build, establish distinction from the Facebook app and communicate our purpose in the world.”.

The recognisable Facebook app and website blue identity will remain the same. The new corporate identity will be used to remind consumers that products such as Instagram and WhatsApp sit under the Facebook brand.

The new brand identity uses a custom rounded typeface and goes the opposite direction to their other products (Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp) with the use of capital letters. The brand also uses different colours depending on the product it’s representing (for example it would be green on the WhatsApp app).

Simple, effective, but not really pushing any boundaries and isn’t going to win any design awards soon, but overall it gets a like from us. For more information visit the Facebook Newsroom.

Today we see Google+ finally laid to rest. Launched back in 2011, Google+ was Google’s attempt at a social network platform.

Like many social media networks, it had the usual features such as status updates and photo posts. One of its key feature was the ability to sort friends into ‘Circles’ and make ’hangout’ group video calls.

Google let the world know that millions of users had signed up within the first few weeks of the launch, but unfortunately for Google few users were using it and the social media platform never really took off.

Surprisingly Google+ isn’t the first product Google has failed at, check out ‘The Google Cemetery’ created by Naeem Nur, which lists a number of Google products that didn’t quite make it.

RIP Google+.

What is Gutenberg?

Named after Johannes Gutenberg, inventor of the printing press in Germany in the mid-1400s, Gutenberg is the latest major update to WordPress, which hopes to revolutionise the WordPress publishing experience. Gutenberg’s primary change will see the replacement of the existing post/page editor, with a new visual block editor.

What’s the issue?

Since it’s beta launch, Gutenberg has stirred up a debate among WordPress users. Users are split, some see the new update as a modern approach to editing content, while other users are worried about how the recent update may affect current WordPress websites and plugins. As with any major updates, there will also be small bugs that will be ironed out over the next few months.

What should I do?

We would recommend updating your website to the latest version of WordPress (Gutenberg), for security benefits. But if you’re not quite ready to learn the new features of Gutenberg, we would also recommend installing the WordPress Classical Editor plugin, which will allow you to edit your pages in the existing way (pre-Gutenberg update).

If you’re looking to improve your online presence with a brand new website or a website refresh, we can help! Get in touch with us today.

The purpose of an SSL certificate is to keep sensitive information sent across the Internet encrypted so that only the intended recipient can make use of it. Without the use of an SSL any data that is input into a website can be seen by third parties, who may be snooping around a users web session.

Google’s Chrome internet browser is now identifying insecure sites (websites not using an SSL) with an exclamation mark and “Not secure” label in the browser bar in front of the web address. If a website does have a secure connection established, a padlock icon and HTTPS prefix appear in the browser bar. As shown in the example images.

There are also SEO benefits to having an SSL certificate installed, Google has stated that security features such as https and SSL certificates are ranking factors, so a website that uses SSL may be favored over one that doesn’t have one.

To discuss implementing an SSL certificate to your website, contact us.
